What is image alternative text?

Alt text is a textual description of an image.

It is essential for web accessibility, as it enables visually impaired users using screen readers to understand the content of the image.

Alternative text also contributes to the deliverability of emails by reducing the risk of them being considered as spam.

Why use alternative text?

  • Accessibility: visually impaired users can understand the content of the image.
  • Alternative display: if an image cannot be loaded, alternative text will be displayed instead.

How do I enter alternative text in Journey?

In Journey, alternative text is entered from the thumbnail of the image in the library. Here's how to do it:

  1. Go to the image library
  2. Click on the Alternative text icon that appears when you hover over the thumbnail of the image you want.
  3. Enter the alternative text in the field provided, up to a maximum of 100 characters.
  4. Click Save to apply the alternative text to the image.

In Journey, images automatically have the alternative text ‘image’ by default. It is strongly recommended that you replace this text with a specific, relevant description for each image in order to improve accessibility and deliverability.

Best practices for alternative text

  • Be descriptive: Describe what the image represents in a concise and precise way.
  • Avoid redundancy: Don't start with ‘Image of’ or ‘Photo of’.
  • Reflect the content: Make sure that the alternative text really corresponds to the image.

Examples:

  • For an image of your company logo, use alternative text, such as: logo company name instead of logo.
  • For an image showing a team meeting, use alternative text such as: Team meeting discussing new projects instead of Meeting image.
